Theory and Design for Mechanical Measurements

The fifth edition of this market leading book provides mechanical engineers with the most up to date coverage of mechanical measurements. Sound theory is highlighted by rich and current practical examples. New chapter opening learning objectives and outcomes explore the critical concepts that will be discussed. New and revised examples and problems clearly show how the information is applied in the field. Expanded discussions are included on measurements, equipment, and basic metrology. The DFT concept presentation is now simplified. More pictures have also been added to make the material easier to learn. Mechanical engineers will then better understand the elements for the design of measurement systems and measurement test plans.

Overall if a book had covered the chapters in terms of material like this one I would be a happy customer, that being said though this book exposes readers to the fundamentals, it lacks the content for one to develop it, I will be finishing my Mechanical Measurements and Instrumentation class, and to be quite honest I've only used this to stay on track with what needs to be learned, I have had to read elsewhere on the internet just to be up to speed, the solutions in the manual are as someone else said, the "riddled with errors." I have learned some things from this book, but mostly I learned about mechanical measurements by using Labview and performing actual experiments, what is truly tragic is how statistics and signal analysis is the emphasis of this class, but this is where the book lacks in bringing context and truly showing math, I'm not asking for a bible in how to memorize a process, but this book hardly if ever works a problem 100 percent through, linear interpolation was a biggie. I can also say this without a doubt a lazy book when it comes to explaining the significance of equations, nomenclature is included and is standard, but this book is really just a book filled with equations and data tables. For example... Static Sensitivity, its basically a calibration standard where you take the slope or the gradient to find if there are any systematic errors in relation to the instrument you are using.... well it neglects to mention how you can actually calculate it and adjust for different conditions such as when there is no data table provided with time domains or an equation that is linear or when you are trying to analyze a 2nd order differential equation and an input periodic function has been incorporated and you need to adjust for the resonant frequencies. WHICH IS HUGE FOR VIBRATIONS, only half the variables are explained in some chapter, the others are mentioned in previous chapters, but they lack to provide any true derivations or complex enough examples that you can truly grasp the material without a facilitator, I was going to my professor constantly just to understand the significance of some of the reading material. To be honest, I think our class that uses this book tries to expose us to material that probably should be taught before even using this book, that being said this really isn't a good book for a beginner, but it probably is a requirement for most doing their undergrad, there are some actual examples that haven't been fixed, which is rather pathetic for a 5th edition book.Another note that I'd like to make is I know or I "feel" that the author is not actually aware of the significant figures rules... he rounds after every math operation to the respective significant figure... but if you are trying to reduce error and maximize consistency you keep it in variable form.. or try to anyway... round to a reasonable number of significant figures for simplicity's sake.. then round finally at the end... He round up sometimes by a whole tenths place or by 2 sig figs, even though the number is.... well lets say for example you have a value of 1.3042 inches, and this is not the final result you are interested in, he will literally round it up to like 1.31 inches and plug it into the next equation, that's terrible standards, and he often does this on qualitative measurements not quantitative where perhaps rounding to a whole digit is necessary for when account for a number of samples. Enough examples I suppose, this by far is one of the hardest books to learn from.Normally I don't write reviews, but all things considered I felt this one deserved it. This is quite honestly up there in helpfulness as the standard dynamics and static book written by Ferdinand Beer if not just as useless, no need to bash him completely, I suppose his mechanics of materials book is probably the best written book I've had to use so far, so much so that I could actually do every problem just after reading the respective chapter. That being said you can take my review in grains, but in my honest opinion a measurements book should be a reference book where everything is straight forward, something this book tries to accomplish, but when I mean straight forward, I mean there should be no question in math or methodology, it should look like a path with a straight line, obvious and laid out, I needed to know how to do measurements, which this book failed to deliver to me.

I used this book for my mechanical measurements class and my professor was constantly correcting errors in the book. Some of the errors were on the basic principle formulas of the section it was in. As an example a very fundamental equation of mechanical engineering, "Poisson's Ratio", was incorrect in this book. These types of errors are unacceptable in a textbook for this level of study.

First off, the book has too many errors in formulas. This book is really concise and is not meant for beginners. If you have basic knowledge of the material or a very strong calculus background go for it. I found it too concise.PS: if you are buying this for your class I would recommend buying an additional book by another author to understand the material better unless you have a great professor

Thanks

It's a textbook...

Great Seller and great price!

This book though is titled "Theory and ......Measurement" giving an impression that it is meant only for Mechanical Engineers, but it is extremely useful any professional having to do even little with Science and Mathematics. I am an Aerospace Engineer. This book is one of the master pieces. There are so many topics in this book, which are so important and dealt with so well. The topics Statistical Analysis, Signal Conditioning, Uncertainty Analysis, Data Acquisition, Fourier Analysis are excellent and ENLIGHTENING. I am glad I bought this book and will keep this book my whole life.

I originally put 3 stars, but then I realized that I was downgrading for the subject material. I did not enjoy this class at all, but the book was actually pretty good.Concepts are well explained. I wish there were more examples, but the ones present are good ones. Writing is a little dry, even for an engineering textbook - but again, that might just be my take on the material.
